Type Approval

Type Approval with the Nigerian Communications Commission

What it is

Section 132 of the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 requires every model of communications equipment used in Nigeria to be Type Approved. The Nigerian Communications Commission (the Commission) grants it. The rules are in the Commission's Type Approval Business Rules of August 2024. Type Approval is granted once per model, to the manufacturer or to an agent acting for it. A model that is not Type Approved cannot be registered on the Device Management System. It cannot lawfully be sold.

Who needs it

Manufacturers launching a model in Nigeria. Importers and distributors bringing in a model that has not been filed. Companies deploying network equipment, laptops, tablets or point-of-sale terminals.

What we need from you

Model name and number; manufacturer's declaration of conformity and test reports [exact document list to be confirmed from the Business Rules]; product photographs and labels; the manufacturer's letter of authorisation if we file as agent.
